The stakes and excitement of both of these movies are intended to be tied to the danger these characters put themselves in- the consequences of their own actions- but there are no stakes if I just do not care what the hell happens next. That’s because both lack a single character that I give a shit about. Do you hold moviegoers to a standard of turning off their humanity for a robotically objective viewing, or expect them to pretend they don’t get bored in a movie? I’ll be the first to admit that I also think Casino (and Wolf of Wall Street) are two of Scorsese’s movies that were boring to me.
